Legend Car Coolant Guide: Five Race Coolants Compared for Paved Ovals, Dirt, and Road Courses

Coolant is one of the few decisions on a Legend Car where the wrong bottle can end your night at tech, not at the checkered flag. It is also one of the few where the "best" product on paper is the wrong product for half the field.


Legend Cars run three very different environments — quarter-mile paved bullrings, dirt ovals, and road courses — and each one loads the cooling system differently and answers to a different rulebook. This guide covers all three.


Before comparing anything, answer one question.

## First: Does Your Legend Car Even Have a Cooling System?


**If you run an air-cooled Yamaha — the 1200, 1219, or 1250 — stop here. You have no coolant to change.** Those engines shed heat through fins and through the oil. Your cooling system is your oil, your oil cooler, and airflow through the nose. Nothing in this article applies to you; the fluid decision that matters for your car is oil selection and oil temperature management.


**If you run the liquid-cooled FZ-09/MT-09 847cc triple, this article is for you.** That engine came out of a motorcycle with a thermostat, a fan, and a radiator sized for a bike moving through open air. Bolted into a Legend Car chassis, it faces a fundamentally different thermal problem — and the coolant you choose is one of the cheapest levers you have on it.

## Why the Yamaha Triple Runs Hot in a Legend Car


The FZ-09 lives an easy life in a motorcycle. In a Legend Car, three things change at once:


**Airflow disappears when you need it most.** A bike at 60 mph has clean, unobstructed air across the radiator core. A Legend Car has a body, a nose, ducting, and — critically — pace laps, staging, and caution periods where the car is barely moving and the engine is still making heat.


**The engine never gets a break.** Load is continuous and heat rejection depends entirely on a small core and a fan.


**Heat soak on the grid is real.** Sitting in staging with a hot engine and no airflow lets coolant temperature climb after you have stopped making power. Pack racing behind a slower car does the same thing.


The practical consequence: cylinder head temperature — not bulk coolant temperature at the sender — is what limits you. That is exactly the failure mode wetting agents are designed to attack, which is why these products matter more in this application than they would in a street car.


### How the Three Surfaces Differ


**Paved short ovals.** A quarter-mile bullring keeps the motor pinned in a narrow, high-load RPM band lap after lap with no coast-down and no recovery. Average speed is low, so airflow through the core is modest even at speed. The worst thermal moment of a Legend Car night is usually not the green flag — it is four laps behind the pace car after a hot run. Features are short, but consecutive heat races, a feature, and long staging periods stack the heat load across the evening.


**Dirt ovals.** Everything above, plus a radiator core that fills with mud and clay. Dirt racing turns coolant selection into a secondary concern behind core cleanliness — a partially packed radiator will overwhelm any chemistry advantage. Dirt cars also run more wheelspin and more time at high RPM with less forward speed, which is the worst possible combination for heat rejection. Screens, deflectors, and between-heat blowouts matter more here than the label on the jug.


**Road courses.** The most sustained thermal load of the three. Sessions run 20–30 minutes instead of 25 laps, so there is no natural cooling break. Straights give you real airflow, which helps — but the payback is long full-throttle pulls, heavy braking zones, and technical sections where speed drops while load stays high. Where an oval car sees peaky heat spikes, a road course car sees a high plateau that lasts the whole session. Coolant that holds its heat-transfer advantage across a wide temperature range is worth more here than a product tuned for one narrow band.


Road course Legend Cars also face the strictest fluid rules of the three, which matters more than any of the above.

## The Physics Worth Understanding


**Water carries heat better than glycol.** Plain water has a specific heat capacity near 1.0 BTU/lb·°F and better thermal conductivity than any glycol blend. A conventional 50/50 antifreeze gives up roughly 15–20% of that heat-carrying capacity. Every degree of freeze protection you buy, you pay for in heat rejection.


**Water alone is still a bad idea.** Untreated water corrodes and pits the all-aluminum Yamaha castings, drives galvanic activity between dissimilar metals, and offers no water pump seal lubrication. It also has high surface tension, which encourages nucleate boiling — steam pockets forming on the hottest surfaces around the exhaust valve seats. Those bubbles are insulators. A steam layer clinging to a combustion chamber wall stops transferring heat almost completely, which is how you can see an acceptable gauge reading while a hot spot quietly detonates.


**Wetting agents attack that vapor layer.** Surfactants lower surface tension so bubbles release instead of forming a film. This is why "reduces temps by X degrees" claims are real but conditional — the gain shows up where localized boiling was happening. If your car is not heat-limited, you will not see the full number.


**Pressure buys boiling point.** Roughly 3°F per psi of cap pressure. A water-based coolant that boils at 212°F unpressurized sits near 260°F behind a 16 psi cap. That is why a glycol-free, zero-freeze-protection coolant is completely viable in a healthy Legend Car — and dangerous in one with a tired cap or a weeping hose.

## Read Your Rulebook Before You Read Any Spec Sheet


Glycol on a racing surface is slick, difficult to clean, and turns a blown hose into a red flag and a lengthy cleanup. How hard that rule bites depends on where you race:


- **Road courses** are the strictest. Glycol bans are close to universal in club and open-track road racing, because a glycol spill on a high-speed line is a genuine safety event and cleanup shuts the session down. NASA's Club Codes & Regulations, for example, prohibit glycol-based antifreeze and other additives that could create a slippery condition if spilled. If you run road courses, plan on glycol-free and do not treat it as optional.

- **Paved ovals** commonly prohibit glycol as well, at either the sanctioning-body or the individual-track level.

- **Dirt ovals** are typically the most permissive, since a clay surface handles a spill differently than asphalt — but "typically" is not a rule, and promoters vary.


Three of the five products below are glycol-free. Two contain propylene glycol. **Propylene glycol is still a glycol** — "non-toxic" and "biodegradable" are environmental claims, not tech-inspection claims. Rules written against "glycol-based antifreeze" as a category, like NASA's, do not carve out an exception for the friendly kind.


**Know which rulebook governs your event.** Legend Car road racing can be INEX-sanctioned, but it is just as often run under SCCA, NASA, another club organization, or an overseas national authority — and Legend Cars race road courses well outside the US. Those bodies write their own coolant rules, and they are generally tighter than what you would clear at a Saturday night oval. Check the rulebook for the organization sanctioning the specific event, plus the host circuit's supplementary regulations. A promoter or host organization can always be stricter than the sanctioning body, and a car that passed tech at your home track has not been cleared for anything else.

## The Five Coolants


### Red Line SuperCool® Extreme (1/2 Gallon)


Formerly sold as SuperCool® with WaterWetter®, this is purified, deionized water premixed with the correct proportion of WaterWetter — the ratio you would otherwise have to get right yourself.


- **Glycol:** none. Red Line states the product contains no ethylene glycol and freezes at 32°F.

- **Claimed benefit:** reduces coolant temperatures by up to roughly 20°F by eliminating the vapor barrier on hot metal surfaces.

- **Corrosion:** satisfies ASTM D2570 and D1384 corrosion testing, protects aluminum, cast iron, copper, brass, and bronze, and cleans and lubricates water pump seals.

- **Legend Car angle:** this product is explicitly formulated for motorcycles, ATVs, and karts — which is precisely what your engine is. It is also compatible with all glycol antifreezes and coolants, making it the most forgiving option if you are switching over a system that still has residue in it.


**The honest limitation:** functionally this is water with an excellent additive package. If you already stock WaterWetter concentrate and distilled water, you are paying for premix convenience and ratio accuracy. For a one-car operation, that convenience is usually worth it. For a multi-car team, buy concentrate.


### VP Racing Stay Frosty® Race Ready


The most aggressively track-focused product here: 100% water-based, glycol-free, non-toxic, biodegradable, blended with reverse-osmosis water that rejects heavy metals and dissolved organics.


- **Glycol:** none. Designed from the outset for club racing where glycol is banned.

- **The differentiator:** VP markets it as the only racing coolant using three different wetting agents rather than one, staged to remain effective across different temperature ranges. Claimed reduction is up to 30°F engine temperature and up to 80°F at the cylinder heads versus conventional glycol coolant. (VP's international marketing quotes figures up to 100°F; plan around the conservative 30°F number.)

- **Freeze and boil:** no freeze protection, boiling point around 215°F unpressurized — essentially water.

- **Legend Car angle:** the cylinder-head claim is the one that matters for a Yamaha triple, because head temperature is the actual constraint. The multi-range surfactant staging is also the most defensible argument for road course use, where the engine holds a high thermal plateau for 20–30 minutes rather than spiking and recovering. Strongest choice for any car on a warm-weather schedule that lives in an enclosed trailer or a heated shop.


**Prep note:** VP recommends its Frosty Clean flush before the first fill. That is not an upsell in this context — residual glycol undermines the wetting agents and puts glycol-free tech compliance in question.


### Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant


The first of the two true antifreezes: propylene-glycol based, phosphate-free, biodegradable, non-toxic, with an OAT corrosion inhibitor package on deionized water.


- **Protection:** boil-over to approximately 256°F, freeze protection to approximately -26°F, with typical operating temperature reductions of 10–20°F. Meets or exceeds ASTM and SAE standards; safe for aluminum, copper, cast iron, steel, magnesium, and solder.

- **Why propylene glycol:** Engine Ice cites PG's record of eliminating water pump gasket and seal failures and, under high-load high-stress conditions, reducing operating temperature more than standard coolants. PG carries less heat than water but more than ethylene glycol at comparable concentration.

- **Legend Car angle:** it is a powersports coolant well proven in the exact Yamaha-family engines Legend Cars use, and it is legal in CCS and ASRA road racing and permitted at many tracks. That sanctioning is worth noting for road course runners — but CCS and ASRA are motorcycle road racing bodies, and their acceptance does not transfer to a car-based organization sanctioning your event. Verify independently.


*Spec note:* freeze protection is published as -26°F on most Engine Ice literature, though some motorcycle-formula listings quote -7°F and the snowmobile formula is rated near -45°F. Confirm the formula on the bottle you receive.


### Liquid Performance High Performance Racing Coolant


The second propylene-glycol antifreeze, with slightly wider protection numbers and a different marketing angle.


- **Protection:** boiling point up to 260°F, freezing point down to -30°F. Phosphate-free, virtually non-toxic, biodegradable, premixed with deionized water, 64 oz bottle.

- **The LP3 angle:** Liquid Performance's differentiator is an additive package it calls LP3, marketed as reducing heat, friction, and internal engine wear, with a claim of maintaining more horsepower than every competitor tested. Treat that the way you should treat any manufacturer dyno comparison — the test conditions and comparison set are not published.

- **Legality:** stated as legal for AMA-sanctioned dirt track racing events, with some retail listings broadening that to all AMA-sanctioned racing. AMA sanctioning has no bearing on INEX or on your local oval's supplementary rules.

- **Notable gap:** unlike the other three, Liquid Performance publishes no specific "reduces temperatures by X degrees" figure.


**Critical for Legend Car buyers:** Liquid Performance sells two very different racing coolants, and the names do not make the difference obvious. If your rules prohibit glycol, the High Performance Racing Coolant is the wrong bottle — you want Ice Water, covered next. Buying the wrong one of the two is an easy mistake to make and an expensive one to make at the tech line.


### Liquid Performance Ice Water Non-Glycol Racing Coolant


The glycol-free counterpart to the product above, and the one most Legend Car racers should actually be looking at.


- **Glycol:** none. Liquid Performance states it contains no glycols *or polyglycols*, premixed with pure deionized water.

- **Protection:** boiling point up to 212°F unpressurized, and explicitly no freeze protection — do not use below 32°F.

- **Corrosion:** a broad-spectrum inhibitor package covering both ferrous and non-ferrous degradation. That matters for the Yamaha triple, which pairs aluminum castings with steel and brass elsewhere in the loop.

- **Legality:** stated as legal for sanctioned asphalt racetrack surfaces, and marketed as meeting the most stringent racing sanctioning body specifications. Liquid Performance's materials also cite road and drag racing legality for the formula.

- **Sizes:** 64 oz and 1 gallon — the gallon is worth noting, since it is one of only two glycol-free options here that comes in a size appropriate for filling a car rather than topping off a bike.


**Legend Car angle:** this is the direct competitor to Stay Frosty Race Ready. Both are glycol-free, both are premixed on purified water, both are aimed at asphalt tech compliance. VP publishes far more specific heat-transfer claims — three staged wetting agents, up to 30°F engine and 80°F head reduction — while Liquid Performance describes its heat-transfer chemistry as proprietary without a published temperature figure. If you want a number to plan around, VP gives you one. If you want a glycol-free coolant in a gallon jug at a lower price point, Ice Water is the value play.

## Picking for Your Program


**Road course Legend Car:** glycol-free, no exceptions — VP Stay Frosty Race Ready, Liquid Performance Ice Water, or Red Line SuperCool Extreme. Road racing organizations are the least forgiving about glycol of any surface you will run. Of the three, Stay Frosty's staged-surfactant chemistry has the best argument for the sustained thermal plateau of a 20–30 minute session, and it is the only one publishing a cylinder-head-specific figure.


**Paved short oval, warm-weather schedule, car stored indoors or drained:** VP Stay Frosty Race Ready or Liquid Performance Ice Water. Both clear glycol-free tech cleanly. VP gives you published numbers to plan around; Ice Water gives you a gallon jug at a lower price. Flush the system first either way.


**Dirt oval:** fix airflow before you shop chemistry — a mud-packed core beats any coolant. If your rules permit glycol, Liquid Performance High Performance Racing Coolant is the one product here with dirt-track sanctioning explicitly cited. If they do not, Ice Water or Stay Frosty.


**You want glycol-free but are converting a used car with unknown fluid history:** Red Line SuperCool Extreme. It is compatible with residual glycol coolant, formulated for exactly this engine class, and carries a proven inhibitor package — the most forgiving option when you cannot guarantee a perfectly clean system.


**The car sits in an unheated garage or open trailer through a Northeast winter and you will not drain it:** Engine Ice, or Liquid Performance High Performance Racing Coolant — *if and only if* your rules permit glycol. Engine Ice publishes more complete corrosion and compatibility data; Liquid Performance offers a few more degrees at both ends. The spec-sheet gap between them is within the noise of real use.


**You run more than one surface in a season:** pick glycol-free and standardize. Running the strictest rulebook you will encounter all year is simpler than tracking which fluid is in the car this weekend, and it costs you only freeze protection you can manage with a drain.

## Five Checks Before You Fill


1. **Confirm your engine is liquid-cooled.** If it is a 1200/1219/1250, there is no cooling system to service.

2. **Read the rulebook for the organization sanctioning your event.** Glycol-free is the safe default across all three surfaces and effectively mandatory for road courses. If glycol is prohibited, your options are SuperCool Extreme, Stay Frosty Race Ready, or Liquid Performance Ice Water. Road course events may be sanctioned by INEX, SCCA, NASA, another club body, or an overseas authority — confirm which one governs the weekend rather than assuming your oval rulebook carries over.

3. **Replace the radiator cap.** Water-based coolants depend entirely on system pressure for boil-over margin. A tired cap gives back most of what you paid for. This is a cheap part and it is the single most common reason a glycol-free fill "doesn't work."

4. **Flush until it runs clear, then dry the system.** Residual glycol undermines wetting-agent chemistry and compromises glycol-free compliance. Do not skip this on a used car with unknown history.

5. **Buy enough.** These come in 64 oz bottles sized for a motorcycle cooling system. A Legend Car installation with a relocated radiator and longer plumbing holds more than the donor bike did. Measure what comes out on the drain, and keep a spare bottle in the trailer for topping off after a hose change.

## What Coolant Will Not Fix


If your Legend Car is running hot, coolant chemistry is worth 10–30°F under the right conditions. It is not worth 60°F, and it will not compensate for:


- A partially blocked or bent radiator core — on dirt, a core packed with clay after two heat races

- A fan that is not cycling, or a fan wired to a temperature switch that was set for a motorcycle

- Ducting that lets air spill around the core instead of through it

- Air trapped in the system after a fill — bleed it properly, on an incline, with the cap off and the engine warming

- Lean jetting or timing that is putting more heat into the head than the cooling system was ever asked to remove

- A radiator sized for 25-lap features being asked to survive a 30-minute road course session


Fix the airflow and the mechanical side first. Then let the coolant do the last 10–30°F.
