What Oil Should You Run in a Legend Car?

One of the most common questions we hear at MetJoe's Race Shop is simple:

"What oil should I run in my Legend Car?"

Like most things in racing, there isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. However, there are some important factors to consider when choosing an oil for the Yamaha FZ09/MT09 engine used in today's Legend Cars.

Start with the Basics: Use Motorcycle Oil

The first thing to understand is that a Legend Car engine is not a traditional automotive engine. The Yamaha FZ09 engine was originally designed for motorcycle use and utilizes a wet clutch system.

Because the engine, transmission, and clutch share the same oil, it's important to use a motorcycle-specific oil designed for this type of application. Automotive oils may contain friction modifiers that can negatively affect clutch performance and are not recommended.

For that reason alone, we recommend sticking with a quality motorcycle racing oil from a reputable manufacturer.

Why Does Yamaha Recommend 10W-40?

Yamaha's recommended viscosity for the FZ09 platform is 10W-40, and for good reason.

A quality 10W-40 motorcycle oil provides an excellent balance of:

  • Wear protection

  • High-temperature stability

  • Clutch compatibility

  • Engine durability

  • Consistent performance across a wide range of operating conditions

For the overwhelming majority of Legend Car racers, 10W-40 remains the safest and most practical choice.

Simply put, if your goal is reliability and consistency, it's hard to argue against following the manufacturer's recommendation.

What About 5W-30?

Some racers choose to run a motorcycle racing 5W-30 oil instead of a 10W-40.

The reasoning is straightforward: a thinner oil generally creates less internal resistance, which may reduce frictional losses within the engine.

However, every decision in racing involves tradeoffs.

While a 5W-30 may appeal to racers looking for every possible performance advantage, it also provides a smaller margin of protection at elevated temperatures and may require more frequent oil changes and closer monitoring.

For racers who prioritize long-term reliability, 10W-40 remains the more conservative choice.

For racers willing to accept additional maintenance in exchange for pursuing every available advantage, a quality motorcycle racing 5W-30 may be worth considering.

The important thing to remember is that neither choice is "magic." The best oil is the one that aligns with your goals and maintenance practices.

Why We Recommend zMAX 10W-40

At MetJoe's Race Shop, we generally recommend zMAX 10W-40 for most Legend Car racers.

Our recommendation is based less on marketing claims and more on the fact that zMAX developed this oil specifically for the Yamaha FZ09 and MT09 engines used in Legend Cars through a collaboration with US Legend Cars International.

For racers looking for a straightforward, purpose-built option, it's difficult to overlook an oil developed with the Legend Car platform in mind.

That said, quality motorcycle racing oils from manufacturers such as Motul and Red Line have also proven successful in Legend Car competition. Many racers have achieved excellent results with each of these brands.

The most important factor is selecting a high-quality motorcycle-specific oil and maintaining a consistent service schedule.

Don't Forget the Oil Filter

Engine oil gets most of the attention, but the oil filter plays an equally important role in protecting your Legend Car engine.

At MetJoe's Race Shop, one of the filters we commonly recommend is the WIX 51358, which is designed for the Yamaha FZ09 and MT09 engine platform used in Legend Cars.

The WIX 51358 features:

  • Spin-on design for easy service

  • Anti-drainback valve

  • Full-flow filtration

  • M20 x 1.5 thread specification

  • Designed for motorcycle and powersports applications

Regardless of the brand you choose, replacing the oil filter during every oil change is inexpensive insurance compared to the cost of engine repairs. A quality oil filter helps remove contaminants while maintaining proper oil flow throughout the engine, allowing the oil to do its job effectively.

How Often Should You Change Oil?

One of the most common maintenance questions in the Legend Car community is how often to change the oil.

While there is no universal answer, a good rule of thumb for most racers is to change the oil approximately every three race weekends, depending on track conditions, engine run time, and overall usage.

Factors that may justify more frequent oil changes include:

  • Multiple features or extended track time

  • Hot weather conditions

  • Excessive caution periods resulting in prolonged engine run time

  • Dirt, dust, or other harsh operating environments

  • Aggressive maintenance practices focused on maximizing reliability

Regardless of the interval you choose, regularly inspecting the oil for contamination, discoloration, fuel dilution, or unusual debris is a good habit. Oil is significantly less expensive than engine repairs, and consistent maintenance is one of the best ways to protect your investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use automotive oil in a Legend Car?

We do not recommend it. The Yamaha FZ09 engine utilizes a wet clutch system and is designed to operate with motorcycle-specific oils.

Is 10W-40 the best oil for a Legend Car?

For most racers focused on reliability and consistency, a quality motorcycle racing 10W-40 is an excellent choice and aligns with Yamaha's recommendation.

Can I run 5W-30 in a Legend Car?

Many racers do. However, thinner oils involve tradeoffs and may require more frequent maintenance and monitoring.

Does thinner oil make more horsepower?

Reducing oil viscosity can reduce internal friction. However, the potential benefits must be weighed against durability and maintenance considerations.

Which oil brand is best?

Several quality options exist. We typically recommend zMAX 10W-40 because it was developed specifically for the Yamaha FZ09 and MT09 engines used in Legend Cars through a collaboration with US Legend Cars International.

What oil filter should I use on a Legend Car?

We recommend using a quality filter designed for the Yamaha FZ09/MT09 engine platform. The WIX 51358 is a popular choice that provides reliable filtration and is commonly used in Legend Car applications.

A Final Note

As with many topics in racing, you'll find differing opinions on oil selection, viscosity, maintenance intervals, and service practices.

The recommendations in this article are not intended to be doctrine, nor are they the only correct way to maintain a Legend Car. Rather, they reflect our experience, conversations with racers and teams, discussions around the pits, manufacturer recommendations, and what we've observed to work well in the Legend Car community.

Ultimately, every racer must determine what works best for their program, budget, maintenance philosophy, and performance goals. Our goal is simply to provide information that helps racers make informed decisions and better understand the reasoning behind those decisions.

Final Thoughts

There is no secret oil that instantly makes a Legend Car faster.

The best oil choice depends on your goals, maintenance habits, and approach to racing.

For most racers, a quality motorcycle-specific 10W-40 remains the benchmark for balancing performance, protection, and reliability. That's why it continues to be the most common choice throughout the Legend Car community.

Whether you choose zMAX, Motul, Red Line, or another quality motorcycle racing oil, the key is consistency: use the correct oil, maintain a regular service schedule, replace the oil filter regularly, and take care of the engine that powers your race car.
